Test Réaliste (2014)

School Project  |  ONISEP   |  Unity  |  PC

Project description
Test Réaliste is a Puzzle game developped for ONISEP, a French publisher and government agency tasked with the mission of helping students choose the right career path for them. Our mission was to design three minigames that could evaluate the player skills in according to the Realist personnality type of Holland's RIASEC test. Here is a brief description of each minigame:
  1. The first minigame, Construction, is a physics-based minigame which tasks the player with building a structure using predetermined blocks, each with a distinctive shape. His structure must make use of all of the blocks given to him and it also has to surpass a certain height. Once the player has validated his structure, it is given three tests that it must withstands. The first is an earthquake test where the screen shakes violently. The second, a shift in gravity that causes the blocks to float in the air and then rapidly come down. Finally, the final test makes hail fall from above.
  2. The second minigame, Comprehension, gives the player a set of tools and a machine he has to fix. He has to make sure the current reaches its destination safely. Some of the taks he must perform are placing the right gears in the right place, cleaning smudges and adjusting cables among others.
  3. The third and final minigame, Organisation, shows the player a model of a potted plant that he must reproduce by making good use of the switches at his disposal. The pots travel the assembly line in a particular order, and so each pot must go through the correct modules to achieve the correct results.
The team
We were a team of six students, composed of two game designers, two artists and two programmers.

My role
I assumed the role of producer and was in charge of organizing the team, the meetings and attributing tasks as well as following up on their completion. As for my design tasks, I conceptualized the Construction and Organisation minigames and did the Level Design for the latter.

What I learned
  • Managing a team tasked with designing three different minigames at the same time
  • Basic puzzle game design
  • Working with an SVN for the first time
  • Working with a client with very particular demands (because of the nature of the project

What I would have improved
We didn't achieve the level of polish we were aiming for on two aspects: the main menu and the third minigame, Organisation. This is because of how little time we had and the difficulty of managing three minigames at the same time, regardless of their scope. Now that I've gained more experience, I would have definitely assigned more development time to the third minigame. We made a chose to focus on the first two because of the time, but with more thorough planning I believe we didn't really need to make that sacrifice.
